Foodie (Talk Like A Pirate) Friday

My pirate name is:
Calico Bess Bonney

Often indecisive, you can’t even choose a favorite color. You’re apt to follow wherever the wind blows you, just like Calico Jack Rackham, your namesake. You can be a little bit unpredictable, but a pirate’s life is far from full of certainties, so that fits in pretty well. Arr!

Kitchen

Things you may need to cook like a pirate:

Cooking

Hardtack

From “A Taste for War” (a Civil War recipe, but i am inclined to think the recipe for hardtack hadn’t progressed much…though they say the name is also a Civil War invention)

“Mix 5 cups of flour to 1 cup of water containing a 1/2-tablespoon of salt. Knead into a dough and roll out to 3/8-inch thickness. Cut into approximately 3-inch squares and pierce each with a fork or ice pick several times. Bake in a 400-degree oven for 30 minutes or until slightly brown.”

Grog

dark rum
spoonful of sugar
clove or two
lemon juice (to prevent scurvy)
cinnamon stick
hot water

Mix. Drink. Out of awesome wooden mug if possible (though not if it’s too hot, as that is bad for the wood). Also, if you use whiskey or bourbon rather than rum, you have one of my favorite winter drinks. But that wouldn’t be very piratey, would it?

Don’t tell Cap’n Dyke but of course I’d rather use bourbon!
