“There’s cheap bourbon whiskey and pearl snap shirts”

May 8, 2007

I thought at random today of the Jack Daniel’s billboard i saw in Austin once.  It was, in good Jack fashion, black with white text and a Jack logo, and said “In any bar in Austin, you’ll know someone by name.”  Or something very similar.  There were a few others i don’t remember the exact text of, but they all had that same alcoholic-depressive appeal.

It immediately brings to my mind an image of a guy sitting at an empty bar sloched over his Jack on the rocks (it’d be a bottle, but they don’t let you do that in a bar), maybe a few empties, crying.  And, “at least i’ve got my Jack Daniel’s.”  I don’t see the appeal.  Which isn’t to say whiskey ain’t good for that, it’s just not the angle i’d expect to be advertized.
